The First Stone...

Well, someone's got to throw the first Stone... I guess it might as well...

Hmm. You know, I'm not entirely certain what the Jewish take on "sin" is. There are laws, and you can violate them, and I think that's considered (in some cases?) to be a sin. But I don't think it's looked on quite the same way as...

Oh, never mind.

In any case, I'm certainly not blameless or guiltless. I've made mistakes. I've done bad things. I've...

Never mind.

Still, here I am to cast the first Stone. Because, as mentioned, somebody has to do it. (Well, I guess not. In a way, it'd be nifty to have this place here and yet eternally empty because DW just rocks and what's not to like? But realistically... there will be Issues. And Stones.)

Actually, before I get to that, a quick announcement:

Between now and Open Beta only: If you have an OpenID account and want to post something here or in dwrocks, leave it in a comment on one of my entries and I'll repost it for you. This is only for the duration of Closed Beta. After that, you'll have other options. For now, though, I think it's only right that you have a voice in these two comms.

That done, back to the business at hand. The first Stone.

For me, it's... The lack of posting. A couple of journal posts here and there. Some of the communities I watch slowly getting off the ground. But even so, the vast bulk of my Reading Page consists of brief introductory posts on dreamchasers. Which are cool. I like getting to know people and it's fun seeing people come in and be excited and all. But... come on! I want some real content! I demand amusement! Dance for me, mortals!

Get off your lazy behinds and... uhm, that is... Get your lazy behinds onto whatever supportive surface is comfortable and/or convenient, and start typing up some real posts. Let's get the words flowing!

Yeah, okay. Not really technically a Stone. But it'll do for now. (And now there's a post here for you OpenID people to comment on, if you want.)

I've added you so you can see the little I've done. My reading page has a fair amount of content at the moment, though it is also crammed with dreamchasers posts, simply because thtere are so many of them.

(This is going to be a problem for this comm. Needs to find the happy medium ground between "not a flame" and "not grousing over trivialities. Ah well. It'll be what it'll be.)

I guess my only complaint is that it took me SO LONG (1 1/2 days of searching and trying things that failed) to find the answer. Thank God for cesy above and her link to "What to Do"!

Um... my first stone is that I wanted to post an entry to this community but I'm not able. (There just isn't the option and it's not on my "posting access" list even though I'm a member and it says Posting Access = All Members on the community profile.)

I have a small stone, or rather a Thing that I'm not sure if it's even supposed to happen but is kind of a pain if not... and thought this would be the place to start trying to find out if I can find out more about it.

Hmm. For some odd reason, you and a couple of other members weren't listed among those with posting access. Even though, as mentioned, the community is set to "all members." Should be fixed now.

As for the Thing... post away! Hopefully someone will be able to help. If not, you may want to try something more official. An appropriate comm. Or, perhaps, the dw_discuss mailing list.

Posted a comment (since that's all I'm allowed to do as an Open ID user) to the Hikaru no Go community and used a tag that I thought would link to an external web address:

example: My Homepage (http://www.example.com/)

The preview looked fine but when I posted the comment, the link was gone (but not the bold text for the inserted text) and the address was written out.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or something inherent in the Open ID thing but I'm also not sure how to check. I thought I had a link to follow but it was too much for me to figure out when I got there - scary coding looking stuff (unless I followed the wrong link). Is there someplace that I can describe my problem simply like I've done here?

Yeah, that's an OpenID thing. It works the same on LJ. Since you're not an actual account holder, the system is a little more wary about trusting you.

Which... yeah. Second class citizen. Thing is, though, that OpenID accounts are intended for people who just want to comment and maybe follow some journals without making full use of the site. It's not how things work now, during Closed Beta, but it is how things will be in the long run.

OTOH, DW lets you have your own profile and userpics and inbox and just about everything else, which is more than you can say for OpenID accounts on just about any other site.

Okay, thanks for the info. I've never used OpenID before DW. Makes sense. But I was surprised that the preview looked normal. And yes, DW ROCKS for all the very cool things that they're setting up here. Thanks again.

Yeah, it shows up normal in the preview. The link is even clickable in the comment notification email. Confused me, too, the first time it happened to me.

Once DW gets to open beta, will OpenID users be able to post links? Or will they have to use workarounds like www(dot)blah(dot)com to be able to reference another site?

I don't know. I'm not a dev. But I think it's safe to assume the OpenID system will stay more or less the same.

You can post links. Just not clickable ones. So no workarounds necessary. It's just that people will have to copy and paste to follow whatever links you post. Doesn't look as neat and requires a little more action from the reader, but it's functional.

My understanding/assumption is that it's a defense against spambots and such. If they go around posting links via an OpenID account, this ensures that (a) it's not to easy to accidentally follow that link and (b) you can clearly see the full URL before you decide to open it.

stone casting: site icons

A thing that has always bothered me about livejournal and similar sites were the bulky square icons all over the site (examples to follow), and other icons that were pixelated and not as professional looking as some generally used sets available today. I'd love to see more crisp, professional, possibly even colorful icons like those available at http://www.pinvoke.com/ (Fugue Set) & http://www.famfamfam.com (Silk Set) used around the site. In fact, someone on my friendslist on LJ even wrote a Stylish code for Livejournal just to change all those, but it'd be great if they were standard for everyone and really gave DW a completely unique look to go with the fact so many features are unique!
