Posting, as promised, on behalf of miracled:

A thing that has always bothered me about livejournal and similar sites were the bulky square icons all over the site (examples to follow), and other icons that were pixelated and not as professional looking as some generally used sets available today. I'd love to see more crisp, professional, possibly even colorful icons like those available at http://www.pinvoke.com/ (Fugue Set) & http://www.famfamfam.com (Silk Set) used around the site. In fact, someone on my friendslist on LJ even wrote a Stylish code for Livejournal just to change all those, but it'd be great if they were standard for everyone and really gave DW a completely unique look to go with the fact so many features are unique!

I saw that they were having trouble finding a nice usericon that was completely neutral. I used to have one that wasn't from any of those sites, and I'm trying desperately to find it (it looked fantastic on both light and dark backgrounds). /brbsearching.

It's because of the openID precautions, unfortunately. Since I'm not an account holder, they won't display normally. For the link of user icon suggestions, I did post that in a comment on my LJ if you'd like to view them there:

Oh. I didn't know they did that to OpenIDs. Thanks for the alt. link. Those would be nice to use. I like that they have no real color to them so aren't assigned to anyone in particular.

I did have a layout at one point that used them, and I loved the slight transparency to the .png files that made them easy to see on all layouts/all colors.

That's because OpenID accounts aren't fully trusted by the system. (BTW, it's the same on LJ.) You can't post clickable links (though you can post full URLs to be copied and pasted). And images get placeholders.

If you click on the placeholder, you should see the image.

I believe it's a protection against spambots, which have been known to abuse OpenID posting.
